Banking Applications using IBC Network

Objective

The objectives of the project are:

- To investigate the opportunities for IBC applications in banking.
- To demonstrate the potential of multimedia services to reduce banking operational costs and improve customer services.
- To contribute to the IBC introduction process by defining and prototyping a number of common packages of multimedia functions.
- To promote IBC application within the banking community.
- To provide inputs to standardisation in the area of communication services for multimedia applications.
- To disseminate and exploit the results of the project.
The objectives of the research were:
to investigate the opportunities for integrated broadband communications (IBC) applications in banking;
to demonstrate the potential of multimedia services to reduce banking operational costs and improve customer services;
to contribute to the IBC introduction process by defining and prototyping a number of common packages of multimedia functions;
to promote IBC application within the banking community;
to provide inputs to standardization in the area of communication services for multimedia applications;
to disseminate and exploit the results of the project.

Key issues in the research include:
the definition and implementation of applications in banking taking advantage of a broadband asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network facility;
the implementation of common multimedia functions;
the use of commercial systems (hardware and software) in demonstrations to allow an easy reuse of these results in other banking environments;
the use of existing standards and contributions to new standards.
Technical Approach

The approach taken is to clearly separate the issues:

- Communications.
- IT platform.
- Common multimedia functions.
- Specific advanced experiments.

In time, 3 phases have been defined:

- Analysis of user requirements and definition of application scenario.
- Design implementation and evaluation of a first prototype implementing the application scenario with reduced functions and/or reduced performances.
- The communication infrastructure used in this phase is based on LAN technology.
- Design, implementation and evaluation of a second prototype taking into account the results of the evaluation of the first prototype and including maximum functions and performances.

Key Issues

- The definition and implementation of applications in banking taking advantage of a broadband ATM network facility.
- The implementation of common multimedia functions.
- The maximum use of commercial systems (hardware and software) in the demonstrations to allow an easy re-use of these results in other banking environments.
- The use of existing standards, and contributions to new standards (via RACE consensus) .

Expected Impact

The provision of a set of common multimedia functions will result in minimum effort for the delivery of specific user's applications.

The partners have established plans within their own organisations to disseminate and exploit the results as soon as practicable.
