Exploitable results

The project is part of an overall strategy to aid and encourage interoperable train control systems within the spirit of the Directive 91/440. The project, managed by the EEIG, under the 4th framework programme consisted of 2 major elements. Firstly development of the specifications and secondly realisation of testing sites and equipment. The overall objective of the project was to prepare the full scale ERTMS performance and interoperability trial tests. These tests which are out of the scope of this contract are foreseen in three tests sites located respectively in France, Germany and Italy. At the centre of the specifications is the System Requirement Specification (SRS). The SRS references all the other applicable specifications and describes how the system operates, it's language and its requirements for safety and reliability. A comprehensive range of test requirements was also produced. These will be used to verify the system. After each stage in the production of these documents a validation was carried out, and the final specifications were subject to a safety analysis. This analysis includes preliminary hazard identification on all the system functions. During the course of the contract the railways involved initiated a call for tender to industry for the manufacture of the system using the specification provided by the EEIG modified to suit the individual railway. All the output documents for the specification phase have been issued to the relevant parties on CD-ROM and will be in the public domain. STM prototypes have been produced for the following national systems under the contract BACC and RSDD KVB and TVM Indusi and LZB The scope of the contract was to prove the feasibility and prepare test for the ERTMS system concept, later including a provision to develop the STM. The result was that the specifications have been drawn up, contracts placed based on these specifications and STM prototypes developed. The tests have been prepared and will be carried of at the National Trial Sites and at EMSET, the interoperability test site.
