Prodesalination. Towards the large scale development of decentralized water desalination. Detailed concept and pilot operation for a large-scale development of decentralized water desalination

Objective

This project proposal aims at the set-up of a network of excellence in order to prepare the large scale implementation of decentralized stand-alone sea water desalination plants powered by wind energy. It features a time saving simultaneous multidisciplinary approach on three key areas alming at a maximum of results in a short term.
At first it comprises the set-up of a network of excellence executing a concerted in-depth study of water demand and supply around the Mediterreanean and in the Near East. It will evaluate the short, medium and long term potential of decentralized sea water desalination plants powered by wind Energy. The work will be conducted simultaneously for Italy, Spain, Greece, Morocco, Tunesia, cyprus, Israel, Egypt and Bahrein. It will identify market potential, socio-economic benefits and cost considerations, and suggested locations.
Second, a range of sea water desalination systems will be defined and a reference Wind/Reverse osmosis (Ro) plant will be immediately designed, set-up, and operated. This plant will represent the innovative approach of combining wind converters, Ro technology, power and operational control, as well as energy Storage. It will consist of an advanced 220/280 kW wind generator, combined with a modern RO system producing a water output in the range of 100-250 m3/day. The plant will be set-up and operated in the Cyclades Islands of Greece or the Canarian Islands, Spain.
Third the dedicated development of four new concepts of Reverse osmosis sea water desalination aiming at an optimized efficiency and reduced cost of water. These concepts cover a range of sizes from very small scale to medium size systems, all aiming at the decentralized approach. This coordinated parallel approach will be canalized into the set-up of a large-scale implementation scheme for decentralized RE powered desalination systems in the Mediterranean area. This project proposed will bring ahead the RO sea water desalination technology and will open up new applications for wind-energy, thus fostering European Industry (in particular SME) by enhancing technological development applicable at new key markets. It will thus support Europe's global competitiveness in this field of rapidly growing strategic importance.
