Objective
European Countries of the Mediterranean basin mainly, face serious water scarcity problems. Desalination of brackish or seawater is potentially a highly important but energy intensive technology. The proposed project REDES aims to contribute to the combination of renewable energy sources with desalination processes to meet irrigation water needs. The principal objectives of REDES are
- development and standardization of a methodology and a tool to evaluate alternative designs of desalination processes, mainly reverse osmosis and electrodialysis, powered by renewable energies for the production of irrigation water
- development of a Decision Support System (DSS) for screening of the alternatives and the selection of the best design scheme
- assessment of the potential of integration of modern technologies (desalinatlon, renewable energies, irrigatlon systems) in the agricultural sector.
Analysis of water shortages for irrigation purposes in one country (Greece) in conjuction with available brackish water and renewable energy sources in the same area will be the basis of the project, while desalination methods/applications and improvements of irrigation systems will be considered in order to determine possible desalination systems powered by renewable energies for irrigation purposes. The determined schemes will be classified, analysed, evaluated and screened using an appropriate decision Support System which will be developed in parallel in a Geographical Information System. Social, economic, environmental and institutional aspects and constraints will be examined in the evaluation process and case studies will be executed to test and standardise the methodology and the tool. Finally, dissemination activities are proposed for the wider exploitation of the results.
