Objetivo

Animal feed is subject to control in accordance with Directive 86/229/EEC which prescribes maximum levels for aflatoxin B1 in finished feed of 50, 30, and 10 ug/kg depending on the animals to be fed. Methods were not sufficiently sensitive to allow reliable quantitation of aflatoxin B1 at 10 ug/kg and were vulnerable to interference by other feed components, notably citrus pulp and manioc. The objective of the project was to provide reference materials of compound animal feed with an aflatoxin content certified at around 10 ug/kg, and to organise a study of a proposed Community method for determination of the toxin in compound feeds.

A preliminary intercomparison study showed that good agreement could be obtained with methods modified to eliminate interference by manioc and citrus pulp at a level of 15 ug/kg. Good results were also obtained by immunoassay methods (test kits and immunoaffinity columns). A candidate Community method based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was successfully collaboratively tested by 25 laboratories. Compound feed reference materials (RM) containing aflatoxin B1 at around 1 and 10 ug/kg have been prepared and shown to be homogenous and stable.
