URBAN SOLAR REHABILITATION

Ziel

A very important "inner-city" project demonstrating that old residential buildings representing a significant architectural heritage and normally requiring large quantities energy for their heating can be adapted for 20 th century life styles and to reduce energy consumption. This project will also demonstrate the reliability of the BLAST computer model, widely used in the USA to predict building energy consumption. Expected savings in this 600 m2 four storey terraced house are 70000 Kwh/yr. 60% of the original energy needs.

A group of buildings in the centre of Brussels was condemned to be demolished until a scheme was drawn up showing how they could be renovated and successfully placed on the housing market. An aspect of this renovation was the internal redesign of a single terraced house: 4 storeys, 600 m2, 1500 m3, according to up-to-date principles of energy use and conservation. 12 m2 of flat plate collectors will be used to preheat DHW for three flats and an office. Conservatories will be built onto the three floors of the south wall to exploit to the full passive solar energy. The internal design of the building will take into account this hitherto unused energy source.
The whole design is the result of a rigorous, computer aided modelling exercise; the results of this analysis will be compared with the actual characteristics of the building once renovation is completed. If successful the same principles will be applied to similar buildings elsewhere.
Heat losses have been reduced to a minimumby ensuring that; all windows and external doors are tight and insulation is of a high level.
