Measurements to assess sunscreen efficacy in industrial research

Objetivo

Sunscreens, made in Europe are a very important product on the international market.
Quantitative data, and an exact knowledge of the protective efficacy covering the complete range of potentially harmful UV-effects, including erythema, UV-induced immune suppression and DNA damage, are an important prerequisite to improve the competitive position of the European Cosmetic Industry. This aim shall reached in the proposed project developing and testing a new in vivo measurement method to assess the efficacy of sunscreens in the UVB and UVA range in an non-invasive manner, and to correlate the measured spectral data with UV induced biological responses. As one result of the project work a higher security will be obtained determining the protective properties of sunscreens in the relation between solar radiation and skin cancer. The industrial partners will guarantee that the work is nearly connected with the needs of the industry.
The expected results shall taken as a proposal for pre-standards in connection with COLIPA and CEN.
The proposed project combines the method of tape stripping with UV/VIS spectroscopic measurements. By this way it is possible to determine the thickness of the horny layer as the prerequisite to measure the penetration depth of filter substances as well as the spectral UV intensity distribution inside stratum corneum. The obtained results will be reviewed by different modern analytical methods usually applied in industrial research assessing the efficacy of sunscreens and the behaviour of UV filter.
The necessary relation of the measured intensities to the biological responses is ensured investigating the UV induced DNA damage and the immune suppression. This guarantees that the determination of the efficacy of sunscreens includes not only the formation of erythema, as done presently, but a broader range of potentially harmful UV effects. The planned investigations will include volunteers of skin type I -IV.
The expected results shall be a prerequisite to the requirement for sunscreens with an optimal protection against these critical damages and the requirement for a new reference method to test sunscreens.
The planned results will be applied mainly in the industrial research using the additional criteria, proposed by the investigated method, to optimise the development of sunscreens. Thus, the objectives of the project shall yield important contributions to avoid a further rise of sun associated incidence of skin cancer, as an important step to improve human health in the future. The issues of the proposed project shall make available a simple non-invasive method as a prenormative proposal for standards. Supporting by this way the European industry in the timely production of products of requisite quality and at an acceptable price by the development of improved measurement and testing techniques.
