Objective An integrated demonstration unit, which can process up to 1.6 m{3}/h of olive oil mills effluent, has been installed in Fernan Nunez, Cordoba, Spain. Results based upon 1993 and 1994 olive oil campaigns show that the effluent can be environmentally safely treated and polyphenols, animal feeding and composting can be recovered. However no pilot work (only laboratory experiments) have been carried out to demonstrate the actual recovery of polyphenols, animal feeding and composting. The cost to treat one cubic meter of effluents is ECU 9.553. while the potential saving is between ECU 5 and ECU 15.
