CONSTRUCTION AND DEMONSTRATION OF 10 LOW FLOOR BUSES EQUIPPED WITH A NEW ENERGY SAVING DRIVE SYSTEM

Objective

Demonstration of operability of 10 low floor buses equipped with an electric transmission in public transportation.
Evidence of energy savings and reduced emissions as well as advantages in operating features and handling as a result of the use of the diesel electric drive system.
Demonstration of a public transportation system of the future : low floor bus with a completely level floor and electric wheel motors.
Three buses have been in regular line operation for about 11 months. Final results concerning energy savings are not yet available.
The Electric transmission is a completely new type of drive for motor vehicles. Mechanical parts and functions (such as transmission, drive shaft, clutch, retarder) are replaced with electric components and electronic control elements. A generator is flanged directly to the internal combustion engine.
The drive motors are preferably designed as wheel motors or are mounted in the immediate vicinity of the wheel. Only then is a true low-floor bus possible.
The other components can be arranged at will. Flexible electric connecting cables vs rigid mechanical components. Since there is no mechanical connection between the internal combustion engine and the driving wheels, the stepless variation of the torque-speed conversion can be adjusted to a optimal level, and is based on the system's software. As a result, a smaller engine can be used to provide the same performance, and this engine runs under optimum conditions for fuel economy and therefore minimum emissions, under all driving conditions.
The increase in riding comfort made possible by the stepless and jerk-free drive is enhanced by the reduction in noise level because there is no drive train connected between the engine and the frame of the vehicle. The engine and the generator are a self-contained mechanical system. The Neoplan MIC basic model is the first bus with a unitized plastic body. Its weight has been reduced by one third, as compared to conventional buses. This weight reduction represents an additional savings in energy during normal urban line operation.
For the demonstration of the energy savings of the electric transmission in public service buses, the following phases are going to be carried out:
- Planning and designing of vehicles and drive system.
- Manufacturing of 10 public service buses and equipping with the components of the electric transmission.
Operation of the buses under normal conditions at a public transport authority with optimization of system software with respect to energy savings and low emission operation and comparative measurements of fuel consumption during typical city bus cycles.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
