CREATION OF A ZINC/AIR-BATTERY-SYSTEM-INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION

Objectif

The new technology "Zinc/Air Energy System" has proved to be more suitable than all other battery systems usable in electric vehicles till now. Standards are necessary for the components of the system as a basis for the operations of the users in order to create the required infrastructure in the EU. This infrastructure should be set up gradually in companies with their own fleet vehicles like the POST, the vehicle fleets of municipal offices and public bus transports. With this system it is possible to introduce zero-emission vehicles with respect to series production. This technology opens further, completely new fields of applications. Expected results are the preparation of the introduction of this system in the EU, the creation of standards, the demonstration of the viability of the system and of an exemplary proceeding.
- Standards for the definition of battery components, refueling and regeneration station were created,
- standards for the battery (3 parts) were created,
- analysis of the environmental compatibility, the economics, the feasability and the safety of the battery and battery components result in the expected figures,
- the simulation of different operational situations including emergencies in order to assess validity of standardization proved true
- Italian market analyses and transformation to the EU were made,
- economic calculations showed that the establishment of the Zinc/Air Energy System seems to be promising in an economic range,
- the best criterion of diffusion the Zinc/Air Energy System on large European scale were indicated
- a special conference was held on 11th of March 1997 in Turin
INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
The new technology Zinc/Air Energy System works on a chemical effect similar to that of a fuel cell. The Zinc/Air battery has a decisively higher energy density, weighs less and achieves larger ranges at the same time than all other batteries usable in electric vehicles till now.
The Zinc/Air Energy System is an open system which requires the pre-treatment of zinc. The resulting processed zinc can be transported with a minimum of losses in energy. The system does not endanger man or nature in a large-scale application.
This system requires a wide infrastructure to enable the energy circuit driving - refueling - regeneration for the batteries. To prepare the introduction of this system in the EU, the necessary standards have to be created for all components of the system.

CONTEXT
The new Zinc/Air Energy System should be used gradually by companies with their own fleet vehicles like the POST, by municipal offices and other public or private transportation organizations. This system requires a wide infrastructure in the EU. Therefore standards are necessary for all components of the system as a basis for the operations of the user. The introduction of zero-emission vehicles which meet all the technical operating and the economic requirements of the user has to be prepared. An exemplary proceeding will be demonstrated and the possibilities to open completely new fields of application should be indicated; ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF THE TECHNOLOGY
The total energy savings are approximately 1% of the total energy requirement of the vehicles that are configured for electric propulsion rather than gasoline. The annual worth of the total energy saving is estimated to make up 775,000 DM if the system was used by 100,000 vehicles, at an average energy costs of 0.10 DM/kWh and 15,000 km per vehicle per year.
The total investment in an infrastructure for 100,000 vehicles and 15,000 km per vehicle per year in the EU are estimated to make up DM 275 Mio.
