Objective
The aim of the project is to demonstrate an electric hybrid and a pure electric delivery vehicles that are suitable for serial manufacture. Comparison of both types of low emission vehicles with same size diesel versions. Demonstrate the advantages of unity power factor high-rate charging.
Innovative aspects are : hybrids vehicle combined with opportunistic fast charging to extend zero emissions range; direct drive without gearbox to improve system efficiency; battery management system to improve battery operation and life; comparison of hybrid and pure electric drive trains with diesel ones; fast charging infrastructure in public and private areas.
Expected results : hydrid vehicle with improved zero emission range capability :quiter and smoother drive train; reduced battery maintenance and improved life; confirmation of suitability of hybrid electric delivery vans.
An hybrid/electric vehicle permits to go on pure electric mode in ZEV areas and on hybrid mode in ULEV areas and at the same time recharging batteries. This way of working gives a wide extended range for delivery vehicles for public services, postal deliveries and so on.
Current on-board charging regimes are low-rate giving long re-charge times and thereby restricting the range of the vehicle. These charging regimes can take 8 hours or more to recharge the batteries. By utilising high-rate charging, the bulk of the vehicle batteries can be replenished in under an hour extending the vehicle's range. Additionally opportunity charging over periods as short as 10 minutes can significantly increase the available range if performed frequently.
The battery management system will be designed to interface the hybrid to the electric part of the drive train, integrating the battery management into a single controller. Existing hybrid solutions use separate controllers resulting in duplication of equipment. The close monitoring of the batteries allows for preventive maintenance and analysis not available on present vehicles. Inclusion of automatic battery equalisation allows the vehicle to fully charge every battery rather than terminating charging when the first battery becomes full. This results into greater battery life and extended range.
The pure electric Porter also has these fast charging and battery management innovations and in addition it has the elimination of a gear box by the appropriate selection of a motor, differential ratios and drive electronics. This results into a more efficient, economical, and quieter solution than existing vehicles. In current vehicles a fixed ratio gear box is installed to match the motor to the demands of the vehicle, it is better to match the motor to the vehicle requirements and eliminate this extra component.
