AIRBORNE AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Objetivo

The purpose of AATMS is to bring the European avionics (aircraft electronics) industry a big share of the on-board telematics equipment market for future air traffic management and control. The project will demonstrate an airborne traffic management system with an emphasis on data links, communication management and on-board operations. Modules for demonstration will build where possible on existing equipment or software. They will be integrated and validated in flight trials. Industry will be in a position to start product development as a consequence of widespread dissemination of project results.

For a European avionics industry, the capability to develop an onboard architecture for the future CNS/ATM (Communications, Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management) environment is of strategic importance, being the focal point of future onboard systems and therefore dominating cockpit avionics. Therefore, the project will prepare the European avionics industry to gain a significant market share. In the course of the intended project, a demonstrator for an Airborne Air Traffic Management System (AATMS) will be developed and evaluated. The proposed work will focus on data link realisation and communication management and onboard CNS/ATM functions that are compatible with the future European air traffic environment, including flight plan negotiation and 4D planning/guidance.

The 36 month project starts with the identification of the user needs. In this context the involved partners can build on great experience from related projects, in which the user needs for future onboard CNS/ATM systems have been assessed. This consolidation of user requirements is followed by the functional CNS/ATM specification in order to identify and assess possible onboard architectures and to define certification criteria. According to the selected architecture the different modules of the AATMS demonstrator will be realised in hard- and software. Where possible, existing equipment or software will be used or modified. Following the module development and testing at the different partners, the modules will be integrated and validated in flight trials. Messages from Air Traffic Control and the Airline Operation Control Centre will be generated in ground simulators and transmitted by data link in order to validate the AATMS functions in real-life scenarios. Test runs with airline pilots will be performed and evaluated. The project will end with the elaboration of an exploitation plan in order to ensure the dissemination of the results and to bring European avionics industry in the position to start the product development.

Finally, it should be pointed out that there is a strong link to the Advanced Flight Management System (AFMS) project within the DG XII Brite/EuRam programme. This project, also co-ordinated by DASA-NFS, concentrates on navigation and ATM onboard functions and can therefore be seen as a suitable complement to the AATMS demonstrator development.
