Range development in the endangered Sudan Savanna in Sokoto State (Nigeria)

Objective

The proposal will concentrate on research in the following areas: - analysing the farming systems in the Sudan savanna and investigating the socio-cultural, economical and institutional framework in order to explore the scope for technical innovations (diagnostic phase)
- assessing the productivity of the savanna ecosystem and studying grasses, herbs, shrubs and trees in order to optimize the fodder and fuel production

- carrying out studies on the aspects of soil conservation, rangeland revegetation and the establishment of multiple-use (food, forage, fuel, timber) plants

- investigating economically feasible and socially acceptable technologies of improving animal health, nutrition and management in small ruminants, cattle, donkeys and dromedaries

- assessing the use of crop by-products of the ''fadama" areas (plots at river sides irrigated in the dry season) for ruminant feeding and fattening
