Objective
The project will continue the research on the potential of the genus Pachyrhizus (the Yam beans). Biosystematic investigations of inter/intra-specific-compatibility of endangered South American germplasm will be carried out in Denmark. The breeding of new cultivars based on backcrosses between hybrid material and selected varieties will be continued in the Pacific and Central America. The drought tolerance of varieties and wild material will be studied physiologically and under natural conditions in France and Senegal. The crop will be tested multilocationally in Benin. The extraction methods and use of the rotenon content will be investigated in Costa Rica and Benin. Finally, the marketability and consumer acceptability will be examined.
