Study of protein-rich forages for their nutritional and antinutritional characteristics as supplementary feeds for ruminants in the semi-arid tropics

Objective

THE STUDY IS DESIGNED TO OBTAIN KNOWLEDGE ON LEGUMES AND INDIGENOUS SPECIES OF BROWSE THAT GROW WELL IN THE SEMI-ARID TROPICS, AND TO DETERMINE THE MOST SUITABLE SPECIES FOR SMALLHOLDER AND COMMUNAL AREA FARMERS TO GROW AS SOURCES 0F PROTEINACEOUS FORAGE WHICH IS CONVENIENT TO HARVEST AND ACCEPTABLE TO AND WELL UTILISED BY RUMINANT LIVESTOCK WITH LITTLE OR NO ADVERSE EFFECTS 0F ANTINUTRITIONAL FACTORS.
1. PRELIMINARY SCREENING OF SHRUB AND HERBAGE LEGUMES FOR ANTINUTRITIONAL FACTORS.
2. ACCEPTABLE TRIALS, TOGETHER WITH MEASUREMENT OF RUMEN DEGRADABILITY AND RUMEN FERMENTATION CHARACTERISTICS.
3. IDENTIFICATION AND DETERMINATION OF ANTINUTRITIONAL FACTORS IN LEGUMES SELECTED ON THE BASIS OF YIELD OF PROTEIN, ITS DEGRADATION.
CHARACTERISTICS AND THE PRESENCE OF ANTINUTRITIONAL FACTORS. 4. RESPONSE OF RUMEN MICROORGANISMS TO ANTINUTRITIONAL FACTORS. 5. METABOLISM TRIALS WITH EITHER GROWING OR LACTATING DOMESTIC AND GAME RUMINANTS TO MEASURE THE EFFICIENCY OF UTILISATION OF PROTEIN. 6. PRODCUTION TRIALS WITH LACTATING DAIRY COWS.
7. FIELD TRIALS ON SMALLHOLDER FARMS AND IN COMMUNAL AREAS TO ASSESS THE EFFECTS OF INTRODUCING LEGUMES AND THE PROPVISION OF DIGESTIVE MODIFIERS.
THE ULTIMATE AIM IS TO IMPROVE THE RUMINANT LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION OF SMALLHOLDER FARMERS WHO OWN DAIRY COWS AND OF FARMERS WITH CATTLE IN COMMUNAL AREAS ESPECIALLY IN THE DRIER AREAS OF THE SEMI-ARID TROPICS.
