Objective
GENERAL AND LONGTERM OBJECTIVES.
TO FURHER DEVELOP,ASSESS AND APPLY AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SIMULATION MODEL FOR THE PLANNING,MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF SCHISTOSOMIASIS CONTROL INTERVENTIONS,WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO INTEGRATED CONTROL STRATEGIES AND TO IMMUNO-EPIDEMIOLOGY AND ITS IMPLICATION FOR VACINE STRATEGIES. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED BY THIS PROPOSAL.
1.TO FURTHER ANALYSE AND MODELWITH VARIOUS TECHNIQUES, AND MICROSIMULATION IN PARTICULAR,THE DIFFERENT STEPS IN THE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND CONTROL OF SCHISTOSOMIASIS,AND TO INTEGRATE THE SUBODELS IN A COMPREHENSIVE,PRACTICALLY APPLICABLE SIMULATION MODEL (SCHISTOSIM-ALREADY UNDER DEVELOPMENT). 2.TO EXPLORE AND PREDICT WITH THIS TOOL THE IMPACT OF FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HEALTH DELIVERY SYSTEMS ON THE OUTCOME OF INTEGRATED CONTROL APPROACHES(COVERAGE,USERS AND PROVIDERS COMPLIANCE,COMMUNITY ASPECTS, EFFICIENCY OF VARIOUS DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC TOOLS AND TRATEGIES). 3.TO MODEL WITH THIS TOOL VARIOUS POSSIBLE IMMUNO-EPIDEMIOLOGICAL MECHANISM AND TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT CONSEQUENT SCENARIOS AND OBJECTIVES IN VACCINE DEVELOPMENT.
4.TO ASSESS BY MODELLING AND SIMULATION EPIDEMIOLOGICAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH ASPECTS OF A POSSIBLE APPLICATION OF VACCINES.
5.TO STRENGTEN COLLABORATION BETWEEN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL RESEARCH GROUPS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND EUROPE, AND THEIR INTERACTION WITH OPERATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAMMES.
