WIND FARM LUESSOW

Objective

This project shall be used for electric power generation by wind. For this purpose 10 wind power plants, type "ENERCON E40" will be installed in "Wind farm Luessow".
The generated electric power is to be fed into the supply grid of the Energy Supply Company HEVAG Rostock. It is envisaged to produce 11,500 MWh electric energy a year by the mentioned wind farm. It shall be evidenced by this that electric power can be profitably generated from regenerative inland energy sources, too.
The new gearless wind power plant ENERCON E40 has been developed, in order to increase the efficiency of such plants. At present only 2 prototypes are existing which are subject to permanent improvement.
The a.m. type represents a new generation of wind power plants. It is the first gearless wind power plant. The project "Wind farm Luessow" shall contribute to the promotion of this new and economically working plant and to the production stage as well.
Thus this project can be considered to be innovative.
The wind farm was inaugured on 19.04.1995. During the first two years of operation, the reliability was permanently increased, by continuous software development and data adjustment. The average availability during the period was 97%.
The wind power plant manufacturer ENERCON situated in Aurich, Germany together with Windenergienutzungs GmbH with its registered office in Altenpleen, Germany have prepared the "Wind farm Luessow" project.
Luessow is a little village located in the South-West of Stralsund in Mecklenburg Pomerania.
On the top of Luessower Berg (that is a flat hill in this region) the wind farm shall be erected. It is designed in three rows with a distance of 200 m and more between the several plants, in order to avoid mutual shading and restriction of performance.
The wind expertise has shown an average annual wind velocity of 4.2 m/sec at 10 m above ground and 5.4 m/sec at 30 m above ground. These data make evident that an appropriate site has been chosen for electric wind power generation. While a relatively free advance to the wind farm us provided in the west sector (that is the main wind direction), there are some obstructions in free advance to the plant it is necessary to install the hub ashigh as possible.
Beside several other improvements of the wind power plant ENERCON has increased the tower's height. Now a tower of 48 m height is available. Considering the surrounding roughness which the wind farm is subject to this tower could considerably increase the power output, compared with the original 40...42 m tower.
It is intended by us to use this new higher tower, in order to improve the performance of the wind farm.
The 20 kV medium voltage mains installed in this region is not able to take the 500 kV nominal output of the wind farm. That's why we were obliged by the Energy Supply Company HEVAG to build a separate line from the wind farm Luessow to the Knieper transformation station. The distance is abt. 4 km.
The wind power plant ENERCON E40 is a new development representing the first large gearless wind power plant in the world which is equipped with a directly driven controlled DC generator (annular construction) with subsequent 12 pulse inverter and harmonicsfilter for adaptation to the supply grid of the Energy Supply Company.
Due to the missing gear frictional loss and noise emission can be reduced. Furthermore, it is possible to shorten the maintenance expenditure for the plant and to increase the efficiency, but the costs will be comparatively similar to those for conventional wind power plants.
The operation results of wind farm Luessow shall be used for further distribution of information about the performance of this new type of wind power plants (trade journals, EC etc.).

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
