HANSTHOLM HARBOUR ONSHORE WIND TURBINE FARM

Objectif

The aim of the project is to carry on with an EC and Danish financed research and development project (EN3W - 0071-DK) of a 925 kW stall regulated wind turbine for commercial utilization. A wind farm of 4 wind turbines will be located at the beach of the North Sea whereby optimum production of energy and protection of an exposed stretch of coast is obtained.
The wind farm will be integrated in a coast protecting plan near the harbour. Hereby it will be demonstrated that wind turbines on an economical basis, without disadvantages, can be located at untraditional localities which is in the planning are not traditionally considered as useable for erection of wind turbines.
The annual calculalet production of electricity will be 5 MWh's which give a payback time of 8 years.
1. Integration and coast protection :
The project has provided valuable practical experience with on-shore foundation, and this experience is directly applicable to wind turbines forming part of coastal protection.
In the years to come, the Danish Coast Inspectorate expects a withdrawal of the coastline at the onshore farm.
A result of a withdrawal will be that the foundations will act as nuclei of a current reconstruction of the coastline like ordinary breakwaters, groynes, and the like.
The future development will decide whether it will be necessary to connect the foundations with the coastline.
In that the foundations will form the heads of actual coast protection groynes.
2. Technical optimization :
The result of the technical optimisation has been the development of a successful wind turbine design which is specially adapted to the on-shore environment.
The technical adaptation includes full exploitation of the superior wind resources and seaproof foundations able to withstand direct exposure to the sea.
3. Energy production :
In 1997, the total amount of electricity produced in 1997 by the wind turbine park was 5.6 GWh. The estimated production was 5 GWh. The part produced by the prototype wind turbine was 1.31 GWh which means that the three new wind turbines produced 4.29 GWh. This is 1.43 GWh each in average, 9% more than the prototype.
However, one of the wind new turbines was out of operation for one month. With a full production, the total production of the new turbines would have been approximately 4.41 GWh.
The corresponding production per new turbine is 1.47 GWh which is 12% higher than the prototype
The innovative part of the project consists of the following main points :
1. Integration of windfarm and coast protection.
2. Optimizing of materials in the wind turbine, and construction of various moulds and models for prefabrication.
3. Optimizing of the wind turbine's aerodynamic adjustment with a view to an optimizing of the wind turbine's annual production of energy.
By integrating a wind farm in the coast protection it is possible to achieve a competitive price for the electricity compared with turbines placed at traditional in land locations.
Energy key figure = project price/annual production = Dkk/kWh/year
Onshore wind farm : Energy key figure = 2,86 DDK/kWh/year
Corresponding project at inland location, roughness class 2: Energy key figure = 3,61 DDK/kWh/year.

Programme(s)
