WIND ENERGY FARM 1 MW TARIFA

Objective

Demonstration of the viability of three 300 KW vertical axis wind turbines in a 1 MW windfarm in Spain and comparing different versions of the vertical axis machines. Innovation is in the fully automatic control system, the two speed generator and the GRP blades for the third machine.

The wind farm will be installed in Tarifa and will form a demonstration project composed of 3 vertical axis wind turbines of the type CENEMESA-19, 300 KW each, to be built in Spain, at the CORDOBA factory of CENEMESA. Two of the machines will be standard units and the third one with improvements and innovations such as a fully automatic control system, two speed generator and GRP blades also built in Spain. The three machines will be installed 60 m from each other and interconnected through a main switchboard to a 1 000 KVA transformer 380/15 KV main substation. The 2 bladed wind turbine has a 19 m diameter rotor, total height 25 m and is mounted on a 4.5 m base, with an overall turbine height of 31 m. The blades are made of aluminium. Main improvements of the demo machine:
1) three independent braking systems, one on the low-speed shaft, one fail-safe and one on the high-speed shaft;
2) fully automatic operation using new type of sophisticated controller;
3) special joint betweenthe aluminium blade and the tower. The demo machine will have GRP blades instead of aluminium ones. The 300 KW induction generator is placed vertically, in parallel to the drive shaft and is connected through a soft coupling to the gearbox which is placed on the ground.
During the demonstration phase, comparison with the standard machines will show the degree of success of the project. The estimated annual yield is about 600 MWh and the payback time about 9 years.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
