Product information for builders

An EU group is providing information about construction products to help European users comply with legislation. So far, the team has designed and created a prototype online information system containing details about at least 50 products.

Digital Economy

The construction industry is economically and socially important to Europe, being responsible for 7 % of total employment and over 30 % of industrial employment. Yet, the industry is also highly regulated; while new products are continually becoming available, the compliance and other information provided to users is generally inadequate. Funded by the EU, the PRODUCTINFOX (Development of a cost effective system for exchange and management of information related to construction products in terms of articles, addressing European legislation and market requirements) project offers a solution. It aims to collate information about building products regarding regulation compliance, while making that and other information available to users. The proposed centralised system offers numerous advantages and conveniences to users, especially the opportunity to communicate and collaborate. The 11-member consortium runs for 3 years to May 2016. Work during the first reporting period was on schedule, with a total of 13 deliverables being completed. The list includes several reports, an agreed system framework, and compilation of set of properties for at least 50 products and in several languages. Additional outcomes include use case models and test case scenarios, plus a dissemination plan. The project's major milestones were completion of the scientific investigation, version one of the system being finalised and construction of the first prototype. PRODUCTINFOX will provide an information and communication service for European small and medium-sized enterprises in the construction industry. The information helps foster compliant use of construction products.
