Objective THIS PROJECT AROSE FROM THE PROMISING PERFORMANCE OF A NOVEL PILOT SCALE NON-SLAGGING,COAL FIRED CYCLONE COMBUSTOR WITH INTEGRAL ASH COLLECTION.THE RESULTS AND IMPROVEMENTS IN PERFORMANCE SOUGHT FROM THE INTENDED PROGRAMME OF WORK SHOULD DRAMATICALLY INCREASE THE MARKET POTENTIAL FOR THIS TECHNOLOGY BY HELPING TO EVOLVE AN EFFICIENT,COMPACT,LOW CAPITAL COST SYSTEM IN THE THERMAL OUTPUT RANGE 1-30 MW.THE ABILITY TO RETAIN LARGE QUANTITIES OF ASH IS FELT TO BE ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT,AS IS THE ABILITY TO USE CRUSHED AS OPPOSED TO PULVERISED (OR MICRONISED) COAL.THE RESULTS WILL BE APPLIED BY CUR INDUSTRIAL COLLABORATORS COAL PROCESSING CONSULTANTS.IT IS EXPECTED THAT A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF INNOVATIONS MAY RESULT WHILST MANY EXISTING GAPS IN KNOWLEDGE WILL BE FILLED. To avoid slagging and minimise emissions a cyclone combustor should operate with the first stage fuel rich. The internally generated centrifugal force suspends the burning coal particles in the near wall region where they devolatilise and then burn. A unique feature is the retention of ash in the system via, typically, 2 collector pockets. Modelling work included the investigation of a phenomenological model to predict global performance trends. The resulting package is felt to be a useful tool for designers. Overall this work has clearly demonstrated the potential of nonslagging cyclone combustors and construction of systems up to 6 MW can be considered as a next step. Elucidation of several, fundamental, underlying phenomena has been made together with the development of several very useful modelling packages.THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE DIRECTED TO IMPROVING AND DEMONSTRATINGTHE PERFORMANCE OF A NEW TYPE OF NON-SLAGGING SOLID FUEL FIRED CYCLONE COMBUSTOR IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS : I)THE IMPROVEMENT OF COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY ESPECIALLY WHEN BURNING LARGER SIZED MATERIALS SUCH AS CRUSHED COAL. II)THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE ASH RETENTION CAPABILITY. III)OPTIMISATION OF THE DEVICE,SO AS TO MINIMISE NOX EMISSIONS WITHOUT DETRIMENT TO I) AND II) ABOVE.
