LOW ENERGY CONVERSION OF BIOMASS INTO PAPER-MAKING FIBRES AND MOLASSES

Ziel

The objective of the project are to design, erect and commission a plant to produce paper pulp from straw, with the pulp mill incorporating the ability to extract higher-added value sugars from the straw before pulp production. The straw pulp mill is to incorporate an innovative, high energy output recovery process (the Direct Alkali Recovery System) and the presence of this system and the additional value from sugar production should confirm that straw pulp plants to this model can be economically viable at a scale that allows such plants to be built near to local sources of straw.

The sugar extraction technology is to be incorporated in an existing straw pulp mill in Fredericia, Denmark. The mill is currently closed down because of failure to build on stream the chemical recovery system necessary to avoid pollution. A consortium of institutional and corporate investors, including equipment suppliers and paper makers, are investing to restart the pulp mill and rebuild the recovery system.
This financing of the straw pulp plant gives the ability to incorporate the innovative sugar extraction technology without the necessity to build the rest of the process which would be required to convert the extracted straw into bleached chemical pulp.
It is intended to incorporate the sugar extraction process in two stages, phased around recommissioning of the fibre line and rebuild of the recovery system. The objective of this phased installation is to minimise disruption on the site during rebuilding of the recovery system.
The work is carried out in five phases, with the first two, the overall plant design and the detailed engineering design and development, being completed. Construction and commissioning of the first stage of sugar extraction technology will involve installation of crude sugar purification processes and xylose separation technology, using bought-in crude molasses. The second stage of the process concerns in-house extraction of the molasses from the local straw. The final phase concerns monitoring of the output of the plant, including the effects of sugar separation on the quality of the pulp production.
