ENERGY SAVING IN THE CLEANING OF AIR CONTAINING VAPOURS OF CETONIC AND HYDROPHILIC SOLVENTS

Obiettivo

New cleaning process of exhaust air from a resin coating aluminium sheet plant. 95 % of such units are usually not treated. Complement is usually cleaned by absorption over coal. Proposed process includes solvent absorption in a liquid with liquid regeneration. Then solvent distillation coupled with a pervaporation step (distill. study by IFP, pervap. unit with selected membrane furnished by GFT) dist. alone cannot be used due to azeotropes, pervap. is used too pass over them. The unit will recover 800 T of solvents of various grades.

The new process uses organic washing with oil and using a pervaporation (*1) separation process. The process requires 60% less energy than traditional methods using active carbon regenerated with water vapour. In principle the process is one of solvent absorption by an organic liquid chosen for its low volatility and inert nature towards the solvent it absorbs.
The absorbates are subsequently recovered by way of distillation and pressure release. The resultant mixture of solvents is dehydrated and distilled thereby producing the required distillates.
The installation can be divided into 3 main sections:
1. Pre- and post-treatment of air and condesates.
2. Absorption/desorption of solvents
3. Dehydration/distillation.
Taking into account the presence of water-alcohol-methylethyl-ketone and acetate in the azeotropic solvent, pervaporation is used to remove the azetropes from this and extract the successive distillation products; an energy intensive process.
