Project description
A step closer to the first liquid hydrogen vessel
Hydrogen and fuel cells have the potential to propel vessels in a zero-emission fashion. The EU-funded HyShip project plans to build a cargo vessel for commercial operation running on liquid hydrogen, establish a viable liquid hydrogen supply chain and a bunkering platform. The vessel will run on a 1 MWh battery pack and 3 MW proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Most liquid hydrogen vessels are in the planning stage, and one of them is expected to begin operations in September 2021. With no full-scale hydrogen-fuelled vessels currently in operation, HyShip will take steps towards scalable operations.
