Conservation and management of coastal lagoons and wetlands in the Baltic Sea region - implementation of selected priority projects

Obiettivo

To promote an ecologically sustainable development including protection of biodiversity, restoration of valuable habitats through the implementation of a number of priority projects located within those coastal lagoons and wetland areas in the Baltic which were identified as priority areas in the HELCOM Joint Comprehensive Environmental Action Programme.

The HELCOM Joint Comprehensive action Programme of 1992 identifies sustainable management of coastal lagoons and wetlands as a priority issue for the successful restoration and long term preservation of the ecological balance of the Baltic Sea region. The proposal contains a number of field projects which aim to contribute to this overall objective. The projects which are geographically located to the coastal areas of Estonia, Lithuania, Poland and Russia/Kaliningrad fall within the following categories:
- direct management measures to restore or maintain the natural qualities, in particular the rich biodiversity, of the areas.
- supplementary field inventories with purpose to have a full picture of the biodiversity of the areas. Special emphasis will be put on making information compatible with the Corinne system of EU.
- strengthening the capacity to manage already existing protected areas by providing equipment and training.
- development of detailed, operational conservation plans for some areas which protection status should be raised.
- information and education to raise awareness about nature conservation and biodiversity using the already existing protected areas of demonstration projects.
- a limited number of small scale eco-technology projects to demonstrate that the problems related to diffuse discharges of nutrients can be effectively addressed through such projects which at the same time contributes to biodiversity conservation.
