Acoustic Black Holes for Silent SYstemS

Project description

Reducing noise for a greener future

Across the EU, 40 % of the population is exposed to noise above 55 dB(A), generating health and social costs of roughly EUR 40 billion. Traditional noise reduction often adds mass and environmental burden, posing a challenge for industries already striving to decarbonise. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the ABHSSYS project tackles this with Acoustic Black Holes (ABH), a radically new technology that reduces noise and vibration efficiently without heavy materials. ABH is tunable, multifunctional, and compatible with standard industrial processes, offering applications from aeronautics to pumps. By training researchers in vibro-acoustic engineering, the project blends academic expertise with industry partners.

Objective

The ABHSSYS project ambitions to disrupt noise reduction technologies while addressing the need for industrial decarbonization through a ground-breaking approach: Acoustic Black Holes (ABH). Unlike conventional noise reduction solutions, which often increase mass and carbon footprint, ABH offer significant noise reduction without adding weight. Across EU, 40% of the population is exposed to noise levels exceeding 55 dB(A), leading to health and social costs reaching 40 B€. Reducing noise pollution is therefore a central issue for the EU citizens well-being, and is associated with strong technological challenges in the field of vibroacoustics, particularly in the mechanical industry, one of the main source of noise pollution. ABH is a radically new technology and has strong scientific and industrial potentials, as it is intrinsically i) parsimonious and environmentally friendly: its use reduces the mass and volume of acoustic treatments by around 20%; ii) tunable: ABH enable considerable noise and vibration reduction with only minor or local modifications of the structuring, and are compatible with usual industrial processes; iii) multifunctional: ABH can be applied to many industrial fields without requiring new designs. Moreover, on top of all that, ABHSSYS is a green transition catalyst in terms of noise and vibration reduction. ABHSSYS's ambition is to train a new generation of 11 expert researchers in the field of vibro-acoustic engineering through an innovative interdisciplinary training programme. The consortium of ABHSSYS includes 7 academics, all specialists of ABH, building an exceptional team and 6 companies representing a wide range of fields of activity concerned with noise reduction under environmental constraint: Aeronautics (AIRBUS, BOMBARDIER), Aerospace industry (ORUP MORSBOL I/S), Pump industry (GRUNFOS), Acoustic services (SIEMENS), Innovative materials design (METACOUSTIC).
