The main purpose of the project is to realize 14 wood boilers in five departments in the South-west of France. The powers range from 300 to 700 kW which matches particularly the power needed in rural area. They will fire different kind of wood fuel : chips from whole trees, from sawmill, bark, pieces of sawnwood, sawdust. This project is a good experience to promote the utilisation of wood boilers in the neighbouring department and to propose specifications for those who are interested in energy from woody biomass. The programme will also focuse on environmental and security aspects.
The initial aim was to install 20 wood fired heatig boilers and to choose a single manufacturer for the 20 sites in order to decrease the price for new installation. Unfortunately, the proposals were not cheaper than for usual isolate operation so it was decided to build just 14 wood boilers in accordance with the financial support from E.U.
Specifications for new installations have been written by APAVE (a french organisation specialized in boilers) and will be spread to those who are interested in this kind of energy. We think this document could help the dissemination of wood boilers in France by a better knowlwedge of the technology.
The first phase was devoted to the identification of the sites, to the detailed studies of each of them, and to the elaboration of the technical specifications of the heating plants. An international call for tender has been launched at European level to choice the boiler manufacturer.

An extensive monitoring programme will follow up the two first heating seasons of each plant to assess both energy balances and economical performances.
