Obiettivo To investigate the current capabilities of General Circulation Models to correctly model the atmospheric circulation from the surface and up to the stratopause, with special attention to the middle atmosphere, and to investigate the role of stratospheric circulation in tropospheric climate and climatic variability. The current GCMs will be documented, and these descriptions will be kept updated in the light of improvements made to the models. Middle atmosphere and stratospheric datasets will be assembled and will be compared and documented. The GCMs will be compared to identify common systematic errors and differences between them. The climatological mean states, quasi-stationary and transient waves will be compared and documented, and a number of specific aspects of the middle atmospheric circulation will be studied in detail: The thermal structure of the polar lower stratosphere, the tropical quasi biennial and semiannual oscillations. A number of specific analyses will be performed relating to the evolution of stratospheric warming events, the linking of stratosphere and troposphere, and the modes of variability, including circulation indices, EOFs and teleconnections. The models parametrisation schemes will be evaluated with a view to assess their influence on the models systematic errors, and improved parametrisations will be developed and tested. An important part is the documentation of improvements obtained and their consistency between the models. A special study will be devoted to the intercomparison and improvement of the radiation codes. EuroGrips is a European contribution to the international GRIPS (GCM-Reality Intercomparison for SPARC) project within the 'Stratospheric Processes and their Role in Climate' (SPARC) programme of the WCRP.
