Intelligent Airbag Model Systems Based on Environmental Friendly Gasgenerators

Obiettivo

Objectives and content
The actually used airbag gas generators based on NaN3 produce harmless gases. However, the basic material is extremely toxic and induces risks with respect to production, storage, transport, processing and environmental impact. Worldwide research activities aim at its substitution.
It is the objective of the research project to develop a model airbag gas generator which shows an economic solution as an alternative to NaN3 on systems of more intelligent and flexible reactions on accidents
- a two-chamber airbag gas generator with a fast and slow gas output - no environmental and toxic impacts
- reduced costs
- long term stable
The model airbag module will show a gas output exceeding actual gas generators by a factor of 1.5 and reduced costs of about 0.75.
It will be:
- based on a non-toxic gasgenerator producing only nitrogen and carbon dioxide with trace constituents far below the limits of regulations:
- a concept of module to react flexible on accidents combining gas production unit in e.g. a two stage generator with an adapted igniter and electronics and sensorics which take into account the complexity of an accident
The successful development will bring car occupant systems to a new level of technological stage. The complementary activities of the project partners allow the development of a complete new system being able to be brought to the market 3 years after project end.
