Objective
1. Creation of the ACOHIR-scanner, an integrated low-cost modular system for recording, processing and delivery of accurate colour high-resolution images from 3D objects, incorporating a number of views covering up to 360 degrees. The ACOHIR scanner will include all necessary tools for creation and encoding of ACOHIR images.
2. Creation of ACOHIR-VR, a high resolution accurate colour viewer. Using techniques similar to QuickTime VR and Surround Video, ACOHIR-VR will enable viewing of objects acquired by the ACOHIR-scanner on a multitude of platforms, including on-line applications.
The project consists of four industrial partners, one research group and two user groups. The research group (NG and ENST) will carry out all necessary developments for the proposed commercial prototype product. The industrial partners (ATC, BARCO, COBAX, VS) will be involved with the management, user needs analysis and the creation of the commercial products. The first user group (user group 1-UG1) will test the prototype for applications within a museum environment and for educational purposes, while the industrial group (UG2) will apply the system for creation of digital catalogues for commercial products (furniture and ceramics).
ACOHIR will contribute towards the creation of the following products:
1. The ACOHIR-scanner, a hardware system for recording high-resolution accurate colour views of 3-dimensional objects.
2. The ACOHIR-VR, a virtual reality system used to visualise objects captured by the ACOHIR-scanner.
3. An on-line browser of ACOHIR images over networks, taking into account bandwidth restrictions.
The ACOHIR products can be exploited by a number of ways such as:
- creation of databases of objects of complex and irregular shapes using standard and thus inexpensive tools, with accurate colour registration at a high spatial resolution;
- creation of a low-cost commercial system for scanning of 3D objects;
- creation of tools for viewing the recorded objects at stand-alone or on-line applications;
- providing to electronic publishers essential tools for creating cost-effective accurate colour high-resolution representations of 3D objects. Potential target groups: on-line network browsers; private and public sector organisations, general public.
