Improving air quality in aircraft cabins using 'measurements in the sky' and innovative designs and technologies

Obiettivo

Cabin air addresses growing concerns over air quality in commercial aircraft. Problems addressed include risk of disease transmission; impact of elevated pollutant levels (due to recirculation of air) and low humidity on occupants. A measurement program on board generic aircraft will relate cabin air quality to the performance of environmental control systems (ECS), filtration systems, cabin air distribution and energy consumption. Cabin air will provide innovative designs and technical solutions for ECS, filtration and cabin air distribution and control while optimising cabin air quality and minimising fuel consumption. Guidelines on pre-normative European standards will be drafted. Expected results include a comprehensive survey of cabin air quality and solutions for oxygen enrichment of cabin air, reduction or elimination of air bleed leading to improved engine operation, enhanced systems and novel air distribution (local supply and control).
