MAGNETIC RECORDING

Obiettivo


Research was conducted in 4 main areas:
thin films;
particulate media;
head materials;
novel materials.
In the thin film area, work was done in the following subjects:
preparation and structural characterization of thin film media for magnetic and magnetooptic recording;
observations and new observation methods for studying magnetic structures;
simulation studies and computer calculations of magnetization reversals and recording processes;
wear and tribology aspects of magnetic media.
In the context of particulate media, research was carried out in the following areas:
magnetometers and magnetometric techniques;
micromagnetic models;
the fabrication of small regular platelets by electron beam lithography and the investigation of their micromagnetic properties by transmission electron microscopy;
neutron depolarisation in particulate media;
magnetic investigation of particulate tapes.
For head materials the following areas were investigated:
the micromagnetic structure of thin film recording heads;
the characterization of the magnetic field of recording heads;
domain observations and calculations for magnetic multilayersl
the fabrication and characterization of multilayered magnetic films;
the study of iron based cobalt niobium zirconium multilayers;
soft magnetic films with uniaxial anisotropy;
multilayer films for giant magneto resistance;
soft magnetic films with high magnetization, very low coercivity and adjustable well defined uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.
The research on novel materials was carried out in the following areas:
vertical Block line memory;
the magnetic and magnetooptical characterization of magnetic oxide materials;
hard magnetic microstrips for bit stabilization in vertical block line memory devices;
the development and use of a scanning laser microscopic system.
It is proposed to link some 19 european laboratories in a major investigation of the fundamental science (materials and magnetisation processes) forming the basis of present day Magnetic Informations Technology. This is the predominant form of long term information storage both in the consumer and professional market, which in total covers the range from rigid and floppy disk for digital data storage to video and audio recording. The proposal is seen as a strong response to similar initiatives in the USA and Japan and as an important support for european industry in a rapidly evolving and highly competitive technology.
