Obiettivo The aim of OPTIVIP is the optimisation of an implantable visual prosthesis based on the stimulation of the optic nerve and its demonstration within a pre-clinical study. The consortium have validated the underlying concept by realizing the first fully designed and clinically implanted visual prosthesis in the world; very low current thresholds allowing perception of stable phosphenes in large portions of the visual field and pattern recognition have been achieved. Components and processes (stimulator ASIC, connectors, system industrialization, qualification procedures) developed in the frame of OPTIVIP will be suitable for broad application fields. OPTIVIP will result in a fully developed visual prosthesis including a rehabilitation program. Expected performances are limited pattern recognition, landmarks identification and grasping using visuo-motor interaction.DESCRIPTION OF WORKMost of the components of the present optic nerve visual prosthesis will benefit from a redesign based on optimised specifications. This will mainly concern the external processor (including optimised optic nerve stimulation algorithms), the transcutaneous link, the implanted stimulator with a new connecting system, and the spiral cuff nerve electrode, as well as the overall cosmetics.Improved stimulation strategies will be investigated in the frame of modelling studies taking advantage of the existing phosphene-stimulating conditions data base.Efforts will also be devoted to the design of a specific rehabilitation protocol, to optimise the optic nerve visual prosthesis users' training.A new surgical method to implant the spiral cuff electrode intraorbitally around the optic nerve is planned.MILESTONESThe main milestones are:- Microsystems specifications (M1);- Delivery of implanted processor (M2);- Delivery of microsystems (M3);- Surgical implantation (M4).The expected results are:Components and processes (stimulator ASIC, connectors, system industrialization, qualification procedures) with broad application fields. It seems reasonable to expect that the prosthesis will allow some form of pattern recognition, obstacle detection, rough identification of landmarks, and grasping of selected objects.
