Obiettivo We request the support for a collaborative project to analyse the mechanism of deformation of various microphase separated polymer systems and to utilize the resulting insights to design novel synthetic polymer composites with desirable properties. We specifically aim to understand the quantitative connection between optimal properties and the structure of copolymers on different hierarchical levels. The proposed research distinguishes itself in that it will attempt to address formulated above goals in an integrated manner using the skills of a diverse group of investigators. The importance of study of well-characterized systems determines the necessity to develop the principles of synthesis of copolymers with high degree of synthetic control. The comparative study of structure and mechanical behaviour of polymers with different type of morphology dictates the choice of objects of investigation - elastomers and thermoplastics. Structure features of synthesized polymers will be characterized by conventional and high-resolution electron microscopy techniques, by calorimetric method and by small- and wide-angle X-ray diffraction methods. The mechanical behaviour of studied systems will be investigated by small - and wide-angle X-Ray diffraction method and by unique method of deformation calorimetry simultaneously. Deformation calorimetric investigations coupled with direct structural methods present an effective combination of experimental techniques is expected to serve as a base for further understanding the mechanisms of deformation of polymer systems. The development of theoretical models describing the mechanical behaviour of studied systems is critical from predictive standpoint. Based on obtained experimental data the requirements to synthesis of new type of olefin-carbon monoxide copolymers with desirable properties is expected to be established.
