Carotid intima media thickness (imt) and imt-progression as predictors of vascular events in a high risk population (improve)

Objective

The study aims to evaluate:
(a) the association between 15 month IMT-progression of carotid artery and the rate of vascular events (from the 15th to the 36th month of follow up) in subjects at high risk of atherosclerosis and
(b) the association between cross-sectional carotid arteries IMT and the rate of vascular events. The effect of gene polymorphisms, lipid peroxidation, socio-economic and psychological variables on the same ultrasonographic end points will be also assessed. In addition, the study will:
(a)standardize at EU level an ultrasound scan and reading protocol to be used in future clinical trials;
(b)compare the genetic and ultrasonic characteristics of patients from north and south Europe;
(c) assess the impact of an early detection of atherosclerotic disease on the patients’ quality of life and
(d) its economic consequences.
Data will be analysed with conventional statistic vs. an innovative approach based on artificial neural networks.
