Security and Citizenship: European and Global Dimensions

Ziel

The interaction of new security challenges at all levels (individual, national, European, global) is reshaping the character and possibilities of citizenship. The interaction of theories and practices of security and theories and practices of citizenship h ave been neglected hitherto by Social Science. The proposed training programme in 'Security and Citizenship: European and Global Dimensions' represents an original contribution to scholarship as well as a new opportunity for advanced training in the Social Sciences. This proposal is all the more significant because the relationship between security and citizenship has been one of the ideas at the heart of the European project ever since it started to take on institutional form in the aftermath of the Second World War. Today, in this new century, in a very different context from that in which the European project was born, the relationship between security and citizenship remains as critical as ever. Against this intellectual and historical background, the De partment of International Politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (UWA) proposes to become the site for new Marie Curie Host Fellowships for Early Stage Research Training (EST) in Security and Citizenship. The Aberystwyth Department is uniquely pl aced to deliver an advanced programme of training in this field: being the first department of its kind in the world; having cutting edge researchers; comprising one of the biggest concentrations of researchers in International Relations (defined broadly) anywhere; having built up an excellent record for postgraduate training over the past ten years; enjoying outstanding recognition in national (UK) research and teaching exercises; and possessing a global reputation for the quality and quantity of its resea rch and training. As a bilingual and cosmopolitan centre, situated in a culturally rich but `Less-Favoured Region¿ of the EU, Aberystwyth offers unique opportunities for an EST in Security and Citizenship.
