"From Immigration Politics to Migration Management - Changes in Migration Governance" The proposal's objective is to organise and implement a series of twelve scientific conferences within a period of four years. All planned conferences shall take into con sideration the context of current and future political challenges resulting from international migration processes. The conference series seeks to provide a platform for debates on new and innovative research and politics regarding the management of migrat ion. Another aim of the proposed project is to train participants in research methods and scientific approaches, including the transfer of scientific results into political practice and strategies in the study of gender-specific migration. Practising acade mics and experts will comment on current migration processes from different perspectives. In addition, early-stage, experienced and senior researchers will be given the opportunity to present their research results. In order to guarantee the scientific exc ellence of the conference participants, a supervisory committee will be responsible for the selection. The current changes in the international migration regime provides the impetus for the proposed conference series. As part of this regime, the European U nion faces deep challenges and the development and implementation of a common European policy has only recently started. The planned harmonisation in the fields of employment, social inclusion and asylum policy in 2004 comprise a challenge to all member st ates as well as to the European institutions. Moreover, the majority of the EU member states finds themselves in a period of revising the national laws and policies on immigration and refugee protection. A common European strategy in both the field of migr ation politics and refugee law as well as in cultural minority protection requires an improved knowledge of international and trans-state politics and of local, regional, and national responses. #'
