LOW COST MMC MADE BY SPRAY DEPOSITION .

Ziel

The objective of the programme are research into development of an MMC (Metal Matrix Composites) production route through spray deposition involving a relatively low price, distinct improvement of mechanical properties, such as a preliminary increased elastic modulus, and high strength at RT up to elevated temperatures. The interaction of partners with expertise in material production (Alkane, Pechiney, Fuchs), and product applications (MBB, As, BAe) with two European institutes (INSA, LNETI) having extensive material engineering experience provides the basis for rapid and successful development from research to application.
The objectives of the programme are research into and development of an MMC (Metal Matrix Composites) production route through spray deposition involving a relatively low price, distinct improvement of mechanical properties, such as a preliminary increased elastic modulus, and high strength at room temperature up to elevated temperatures.

A variety of silicon carbide particulate reinforced aluminium alloys have been produced. The dimensions of the billets were up to 300 mm in diameter and 1 m in height. Different deformation techniques such as extruding, forging and hipping have been tested in order to ensure metal to metal contact in the pores. A cladding technique has been developed to avoid wear in the extrusion die and to guarantee a smooth surface of the extrusion. A variety of forgings have been produced without pores or inner cracks.
Die forgings and extrusions were produced from the developed materials and investigated.

Due to the limited ductility values, the spray deposited reinforced materials are critical for some aerospace applications. The products developed demonstrated the limits of this production route, a high deformation rate being necessary to equalize the particle distribution in order to obtain an acceptable ductility. As the amount of material produced increases (decreased costs), the technology could become of interest to the automotive or sports industries.
