Leveraging Benchmarking Data for Automated Machine Learning and Optimization

Project description

Automated learning and optimisation in Slovenia

The Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) in Slovenia is a renowned scientific institution specialising in natural, technical, and life sciences. JSI is dedicated to achieving sustained excellence in Slovenia and the surrounding region. The EU-funded AutoLearn-SI project aims to establish a prominent European Research Area (ERA) Chair research group at JSI, focusing on Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) and Automated Optimisation (AutoOPT). The project seeks to support national reforms and enhance opportunities for EU research funding by incorporating recent advancements in these fields into research and education. The ERA Chair will use benchmarking data across three research areas: Experimental Databases, Representation Learning, and Automated Algorithm Selection/Configuration, as well as two additional themes: Single-objective Optimisation and Multi-label Classification.

Objective

The AutoLearn-SI project seeks to establish a leading ERA Chair research group at the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) in Slovenia, focusing on AutoML and AutoOPT for sustained excellence in Slovenia and the neighboring region. By integrating recent AutoML and AutoOPT advancements into research and education, the project contributes to national reforms and positions itself strategically for EU research funding. The ERA Chair will use benchmarking data for automated ML and optimization, conducting research in three Pillar themes (Experimental databases, Representation Learning, and Automated Algorithm Selection/Configuration) and two Horizontal themes (Single-objective Optimization and Multi-label Classification). Centered on AutoML and AutoOpt, the AutoLearn-SI ERA Chair leverages JSI's expertise and infrastructure to create an integrated research and education center within the ERA, unlocking potential for regional leadership. The project promotes geographical diversity by appointing a USA-based ERA Chair Holder, collaborating with leading EU research groups (specifically, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium), establishing research capacity in Slovenia, and disseminating knowledge to North Macedonia. The ERA Chair's primary goal is scientific research in AutoML and AutoOpt, fostering excellence in ERA collaboration and stakeholder engagement.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
