New solutions to soothe chronic pain
Chronic pain effects an estimated 100 million people across Europe (approximately one in five adults) and has a devastating impact on the quality of life for many of those who are suffering. Although acute pain can usually be considered a symptom of disease or injury, chronic and recurring pain (defined as continuous, long-term pain lasting for more than 6 months) is actually a specific healthcare problem in its own right. It can occur anywhere in the body despite no obvious cause and in many cases doesn’t appear to have a useful function – in the worst cases, it can persist for months or even years and has traditionally been very difficult to treat.
