Success stories for agro-industrial research
The European Commission, DG XII, has published a book compiling success stories from the agro-industrial research programmes. A total of 67 projects are described in the publication which were funded by the EU under programmes such as FOREST (1989-1992), for the recycling of forestry and wood products, AIR (1990-1994) covering research in agriculture and agro-industry including fisheries, and FAIR (1994-1998) for RTD in the field of agriculture and fisheries. The book describes selected projects under the following headings: - For a competitive European agro-industry; - New markets and new products; - Strengthening European science; - New processing technologies; - Improving the quality of life. Each project presentation gives information on the background to the problem which the research addressed, the aim of the research and the results, including the achievements of each project. Examples of projects covered include: - Control of malolactic fermentation; - Non-destructive testing of wood-based materials; - The quality of cork and cork-stoppers; - Mechanical pulps with improved brightness facilities; - Vegetable oils for innovation in the chemical industries; - Detection of microbial contaminants in food; - Improvement of plant breeding techniques for willow coppice.
