CORDIS Express: Big data, giant footprint
We may call it a revolution, but from a research and development perspective big data rather implies a progressive evolution of existing technologies. Since the Internet was invented, the amounts of data transferred between connected devices never ceased to grow, with recent forecasts expecting an annual growth rate of 32% until 2018. New products and services enabled by higher bandwidth and storage capacity are now viewed as a cornerstone of the future European economy. Things like instant access to patient history, better traffic management, reduced energy consumption, increased food productivity and safety or optimized manufacturing processes are just a few of the application fields foreseen by the EU, and various initiatives have been launched to ensure that the EU stays at the forefront of this market. Investment in big data is also key to the development of closely related technologies such as cloud computing, 5G networks and the Internet of Things. In addition to a Data-Public-Private Partnership(opens in new window) aiming to strengthen the data value change, the EU has also been investing heavily in research. Relevant FP7 projects notably contemplate technologies which will be driven by big data, as shown for example in the most recent issue of the research*eu focus magazine on 5G(opens in new window), but also several initiatives focusing on enabling the further growth of big data.
