A total of 1898 declarations of intent were received following the Commission's November 1991 call for participation in concerted actions and accompanying measures for the specific programme of RTD in the field of biomedicine and health (BIOMED), 1990-1994. After evaluation of the declarations of intent, full proposals were invited. Discipline-oriented groups of experts, nominated by all Member States, undertook an analysis of the proposals in September 1992 and evaluation reports were presented to the Commission. Final decisions are expected to be reached during November 1992, to be followed by contract negotiations. It is considered that the selection process, though lengthly, has been thorough, given that only 5-6% of the total number of applications can succeed due to the budgetary limit of the programme. A second call for proposals is likely to be published in the Official Journal of the European Communities during November 1992. The call will be open for all areas within the programme. It is understood that the Commission may decide that the call will be for full proposals rather than declarations of intent. Subjects covered by the biomedicine and health programme include: - Area 1: Development of coordinated research on prevention, care and health systems; - Area 2: Major health problems and diseases of great socioeconomic impact; - Area 3: Human genome analysis; - Area 4: Research on biomedical ethics. Project proposals may be submitted by legal entities (research institutions, universities and enterprises) located in the Community Member States or, under special conditions, in other countries.
