Innovative processes and materials to synthesize knowledge-based ultra-performance nanostructured PVD thin films on gamma titanium aluminides

Bringing together a large range of specific expertise in the field of materials application, coatings development, thin film technology and sophisticated characterization techniques, the INNOVATIAL project will implement the following radical innovations:

--> Synthesize ultra-performance coatings with nanoscale-structure which can provide environmental protection in the temperature range from 650 to 1000°C.

--> First time application of new coating architectures such as superlattice (nanoscale multilayer) coatings, nanocomposite coatings and intermetallic coatings deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD)

--> Generate new knowledge and scientific understanding of innovative coating architectures and chemistries, including computational materials science

--> New process for coating production: a novel PVD method - High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) generates highly ionized metal plasmas

--> New characterizationtechniques that allow for the first time a complete microstructural characterization at the nanometer (atomistic) scale.
