Updates from CHAARM project. The Second annual newsletter has been issued
“2011 brings to a close another year of the CHAARM project, which began in January 2010 and will run until December 2014. The work of CHAARM builds upon the results obtained by the CAPRISA 004 trial, which showed that microbicides do indeed hold promise in the fight against HIV/AIDS. […]CHAARM’s activity covers the many different areas of research that are necessary for an anti-HIV microbicide, from investigating active ingredients to testing delivery methods to designing human studies. As the project is still in its early stages, the work to date has focused around the …...” Important achievements of the second year of activity were the design and synthesis of a large number of compounds, the developing of new classes of microbicides that target the integration of the HIV genome into host DNA as well as the establishment of a collaborative programme of laboratory testing of new drugs for both efficacy and safety. The newsletter also features an article on the 1st CHAARM workshop held in Belgrade this year and interviews from Saint George University London, University of Antwerp, Katholieke University of Leuven, Utrecht University and Instituto de Salud Carlos III.
