The European Commission has made several recommendations regarding the application of Article 37 of the Euratom Treaty, which deals with the 'disposal of radioactive waste'. The Commission has decided that this should refer to any planned disposal or accidental release of radioactive substances associated with certain operations, in gaseous, liquid or solid form in or to the environment. If a Member State envisages modifying a plan for the disposal of radioactive waste, the submission of general data to the Commission is required if the new plan is less restrictive or if the potential consequences of reference accidents in the licensing procedure are increased.
