The Environment Directorate-General has announced its intention to launch a call for tenders to study the objectives the Commission should consider when setting standards for 'priority substances' in the field of water pollution. These priority substances will be regulated under the future 'Water Framework Directive'. This will take a combined approach through emission controls and objectives for water quality. Proposals for emission controls will be elaborated in a separate but parallel study. The study on identification of water quality objectives for priority substances will focus basically on methodology development, data collection, data assessment and the derivation of a proposal for water quality objectives for the priority substances in the field of water policy.
