ITEA, the Information Technology for European Advancement programme, has launched a third call for proposals in the field of software technology. The project is part of the Eureka initiative. Its overall goal is to upgrade the technological level of the European software industry to reinforce European position in applications, and to encourage international cooperation in developing industry standards. The research programme, which involved over 3,000 people in 25 projects from the first and second calls, is inviting interested persons to submit project outlines by 15 June 2000. Consortia selected to submit full project proposals will be alerted on 7 July 2000, with a deadline of 29 September 2000. The final result will be known in October 2000. The ITEA Steering group has recommended several 'hot topics' as a focus for the third call, although these are not intended to limit participants in proposing other project ideas within the remit of the ITEA project. Full guidelines are given in the Rainbow Book, available on the ITEA website. The themes proposed focus on the development of open middleware and embedded software applicable to the e-economy, and include the following: - distributed systems and services; - communication; - content processing; - human interface; - complex system engineering. Typical ITEA projects should incorporate at least two core competencies. An information day on the third call has been organised to take place in 26 May 2000 in Prague. Information will be given about the ITEA programme, guidelines for participation, and details about the administrative and financial support that can be given by the Eureka national secretariats. Potential participants are strongly advised to consult the ITEA website, and in particular the ITEA Rainbow Book, for detailed information on the objectives of the project, as well as information of the companies and organisations behind the project.
