Satellites and balloons for security
The EU-funded AIRBEAM (Airborne information for emergency situation awareness and monitoring) project included 21 partners and 3 third parties from 11 countries. Small and large companies, research organisations, universities, stakeholders and end users were all part of the collaboration. AIRBEAM demonstrated the availability of unmanned platform solutions for security purposes. It worked on providing an integrated framework for crisis management in medium- to large-scale areas, in addition to developing accompanying technological components and assessing the potential of these services. In addition, the project worked on assisting the emerging market of civilian remotely piloted aircraft systems and convincing regulatory stakeholders that this technology is ready for widespread use. Focusing on a multi-platform approach, the project worked to develop specific modular architecture to optimise the use of available systems. This included remotely piloted aircraft systems, balloons and satellites. AIRBEAM investigators also assessed the potential of a sensor suite and communications assets. A situation awareness toolbox was developed to heighten sensitivity to potential security problems. It enables end users to produce high-level information that combines different types of data in order to enhance situation awareness overall. The project culminated with demonstrations at multiple locations, underlining the validity of the concept. These simulation exercises ultimately showcased the potential and value of coordinated use of multiple platforms.
