Innovative research provides key breakthroughs in economic analysis of conflict
The EU-funded TAMNEAC (Training and mobility network for the economic analysis of conflict) project introduced a new paradigm in the economic analysis of conflict through training, mobility, research and sustainability. The aim was to exchange knowledge and bridge the gap between research and policymaking. Overall, 12 fellows were hosted by eight research and private sector institutions around Europe. TAMNEAC had the support of 14 associated partners throughout the world, including conflict-affected countries. The fellows received training in research methods and in how to translate research-based knowledge into effective policies and policy guidance. In terms of mobility, secondments were implemented between different partner institutions, sectors and countries. To overcome existing shortcomings within conflict research, the fellows studied novel research topics. Specifically, they examined the drivers and socioeconomic effects of various types of mass violent conflict from an economic perspective, and risk-management strategies of individuals and households in dealing with conflict. The TAMNEAC team set up a multi-stakeholder network to discuss issues concerning conflict resolution. This platform between academia and industry led to several research collaborations that will continue well into the future. Seven group training events and workshops dedicated to methods and skills development were organised for partner institutions, government, non-governmental organisations, and local and international research communities. TAMNEAC is slated to make a lasting impact in the particular research community and, not least, in conflict-affected areas.
